Program Description:

This one-hour training covers key aspects of hosting practicum students and clinical supervision, such as:

  • The shortage of pre-doctoral training sites in New Hampshire affects student readiness for APPIC internships, with increased competition in New England.

  • Polling results on the willingness to supervise students and barriers encountered.

  • Supervision standards, referencing APA guidelines and local requirements, noting the lack of national or NH-specific practicum supervision guidelines.

  • Compliance and practical considerations for training sites and students, including site readiness, student requirements, and different training tracks.

  • Workload management, barriers to accepting students, and current learning paths at outpatient and inpatient behavioral health sites.

Overall, this workshop offers a concise overview of supervision standards and practical guidance for hosting practicum students.

Level of Instruction:

Introductory

Learning Objectives:

Workshop participants will be able to:

1. Summarize local and national supervision standards (APA and program-specific), noting the absence of universal practicum criteria.

3. Describe at least 2 important considerations for practicum placements as a potential training site.

4. Identify at least 1 factor that distinguishes minority applicants from White applicants when evaluating training sites

About the Presenters:

Jes Leonard, PhD, is a licensed psychologist in both New Hampshire and Maine. She has been working for LifeStance Health (former legacy institution) since 2016 where she began as both a clinical provider and Psychology Training Director.  She established the APPIC-listed post-doc program in New Hampshire in 2018 and expanded the program to include Maine post-docs as well as practicum students. In 2025, Dr. Leonard became the inaugural National Director of Clinical Training for LifeStance Health – overseeing 14  state pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training programs (both established and expanded).  Her role as DCT also includes oversight of clinical training programs for provisional and associate master’s trainees, APRN students, and psychiatry residents.  Dr. Leonard has been active in training and assisting others through the licensure process as an active member of the NH Psychological Association (NHPA), as a liaison to the NH Board of Psychologists from 2016-2024, a member of the NHPA Executive Committee and two-term President, APA Council of Representatives to NH since 2023, and member of the Education and Training Caucus through APA COR. She was previously an adjunct professor at Rivier University Combined PsyD program where she taught practicum and internship seminars and acted as Field Placement Director for pre-doctoral students. Dr. Leonard has a passion for clinical training both as a way of giving back to the profession and assisting our future colleagues in the mental health field.

Alexander Brown, PhD (he/him) is a licensed psychologist and faculty of the NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency program in Concord where he trains resident physicians in behavioral sciences and population health. He works clinically at the Concord Hospital Family Health Center as an integrated behavioral health clinician and supervises students in this setting. His clinical focus is health psychology and behavioral medicine, including behavioral interventions for chronic health conditions as well as the psychophysiological effects of anxiety and depression. Dr. Brown received his doctorate in Counseling Psychology and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Primary Care Behavioral Health jointly at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VAMC in Bedford, MA, and University of Massachusetts Dept. of Family Medicine.  Prior to this position, Dr. Brown was an integrated primary care psychologist at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School and Tufts Family Medicine Residency.
