Description of Event: 

Chronic illnesses change our lives in many ways and are often accompanied by stress and emotional distress and take a toll on our mental well-being. Participants of this training will learn about how chronic illness and mental health impact each other. They will also learn how to support clients in navigating the medical system including self-advocacy, medical gaslighting, and medical trauma; adjusting to changes in identity, functioning, and relationships; processing grief and developing hope and acceptance amidst chronic illness; and strengthening relationships and community support.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to

1. Identify systemic and internalized ableism and describe how this can impact the lived experience of people with chronic health conditions;

2. Explain how chronic illness and mental illness impact each other;

3. Describe the psycho-social considerations needed to support chronically-ill clients;

4. Discuss the importance and impact of acceptance-based models of care

    Presenter:

    Dr. Lauren Leone (she/her), DAT, ATR-BC, LMHC is a licensed mental health counseling and art therapist who uses EMDR, somatic approaches, art therapy, and chronic-illness affirming/disability-affirming approaches to support adults navigating: anxiety; depression; trauma; and chronic illness and the impact of medical conditions on mental health (including medical trauma)
