Program Description:

This training provides an overview of Trauma-Informed Weightlifting (TIWL) and its clinical relevance within mental health, particularly for trauma-impacted populations. Participants will explore how trauma manifests in the body and how these somatic patterns can affect an individual’s ability to engage in traditional exercise. The program also introduces movement strategies and interventions that support regulation and healing. Grounded in the neuroscience of how movement influences mood and nervous system function, attendees will develop a framework for helping clients understand their bodies, advocate for their needs, and collaborate effectively with wellness practitioners.

Level of Instruction:

Introductory

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the core principles of Trauma-Informed Weightlifting (TIWL) and explain its relevance to trauma-focused mental health practice.

  2. Identify and describe the ways that trauma manifests in the body and discuss how these manifestations may affect engagement in traditional exercise settings.

  3. Explain the basic neuroscience underlying how movement influences mood and nervous system regulation in trauma-impacted clients.

  4. Apply trauma-informed principles to movement-based scenarios and evaluate which adaptations promote regulation, autonomy, and client-centered pacing.
