Program Description:
This Lunch & Learn will provide psychologists working with school-aged children a concise overview of common special education procedures their clients and families encounter in schools. We'll address key questions such as: When can families request a school evaluation? What role should therapists play in the IEP process? How can schools implement clinical recommendations? While New Hampshire's special education system can seem complex, effective collaboration between providers and schools helps children and families thrive. Participants can expect to leave the training with a clearer understanding of IEPs, IDEA, and RTI, as well as practical strategies for making recommendations that schools can readily implement.
Level of Instruction:
Introductory
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the legal frameworks governing school-based services (IDEA and Section 504) and explain how educational eligibility differs from clinical diagnoses, including why a DSM diagnosis does not automatically qualify students for special education.
2. Differentiate between 504 Plans and IEPs, including eligibility criteria, types of supports provided, and how to match student needs to the appropriate level of intervention.
3. Write feasible, education-focused recommendations for psychological evaluation reports that school teams can implement in classroom settings.
4. Apply special education terminology and processes to collaborate effectively with school professionals and advocate for child and adolescent clients within the educational system.
About the Presenters:
Dr. Brittany St. Jean (she/her) is a licensed psychologist and school psychologist with eight years of experience working in public school settings across New Hampshire. As the Executive Director of Psychology and Clinical Training at White Birch Educational Services (WBES), Dr. St. Jean oversees the delivery of psychological services for school psychologists and clinical providers across multiple New Hampshire school districts. Dr. St. Jean has experience consulting with outside providers, including clinical psychologists, pediatricians, and therapists, to ensure continuity of care for students. She developed WBES's Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) membership doctoral training program and regularly provides training and supervision to master's and doctoral interns, as well as to postdoctoral psychologists. Her expertise in navigating the complexities of clinical assessment and educational law, along with her experience in training the next generation of school psychologists and developing systems-level consultation services for Special Education Departments, makes her uniquely qualified to help clinical psychologists understand and collaborate effectively with the school psychology community.
Andrea Molina Palacios (she/her) is a doctoral school psychology candidate from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is currently completing her doctoral internship at White Birch Educational Services, where she conducts psychoeducational assessments for the special education eligibility process and provides consultation services to support student success in school settings. Her field training has focused on bilingual assessments and bridging knowledge for families and schools. Prior to her current internship, Andrea worked with Boston Public Schools, where she conducted comprehensive evaluations, implemented social-emotional learning interventions, and analyzed school-wide academic data to inform district-level decision-making and improve student outcomes. This experience has strengthened her ability to provide data-driven consultation that addresses both individual student needs and systemic educational challenges. Andrea's research is focused on progress monitoring for mindfulness interventions.
