Program Description:
A somatic approach to therapy engages vital aspects of our clients’ process that are not available through cognitive work alone. By closely tracking shifts in bodily responses, we can get moment-by-moment information about their nervous activation that reveals unstated “signs of struggle” and disconnections from full presence. We can use this data to get a more accurate reading on our clients’ resiliency, which can guide our pacing of the work. Clients can easily become activated beyond levels of resiliency that are not evident through their narrative, but are discernable from noticing somatic responses. Such “subtle dissociation” happens frequently, and is often unintentionally missed, making the therapy more difficult.
This workshop will present the value of adding a somatic focus to any approach to therapy. You will learn specific skills that you can immediately integrate into your practice to put you in closer contact with your clients’ process. This can give you a wealth of information that arises naturally from your clients to guide your decision making, and make your therapy easier and more effective.

About the Presenter:
Craig Penner, LMFT, has been in private practice in California since 1982. Two questions have guided his pursuit of effective and efficient therapy: How does our nature work, and how can we best work with that nature? This led him to study process-oriented, non-interpretative, and somatically-focused approaches and observe his clients through this lens of how to engage their natural healing potentials. Craig experienced the value of the use of bilateral stimulation from EMDR through this same lens and integrated all these aspects together into an approach he calls Natural Processing - naturalprocessing.org. He has been providing highly reviewed trainings across North America and online since 2014.
Craig has been a presenter at the international EMDR Summit and Conferences, professional state and local conferences, and leads trainings, workshops, and numerous ongoing consultation groups.
