Program Description:
Climate change has been declared a public health crisis. In our region, extreme weather events, such as heat waves, flooding, intense storms, prolonged droughts, and increases in vector-borne disease are causing significant economic, physical, and mental health problems. Individuals, families, and communities continue to struggle with coping and adapting to these adverse impacts of climate change. Transformational Resilience is a model and set of skills that will enable individuals and communities to better adapt to climate change, particularly the mental health consequences. Resilience can be enhanced through acquiring healthy emotional regulation skills, strengthening relationships with others and the ecological web on which life depends, recognizing a sense of purpose, and defining values that contribute to our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. This interactive workshop will provide an introduction to the Transformational Resilience Model, present a community-level resilience project, and enable attendees to develop their own project.

About the Presenters:
Rebecca MacKenzie, LICSW began sharing her concern for environmental degradation and its effects on all life in a graduate class on International Social Work in 1999. In 2011, Rebecca trained to be an Awakening the Dreamer (ATD) presenter, a multi-media experiential program which begins with illustrating environmental, psychological, spiritual, and social degradation due to the climate crisis. The ATD ends with empowering hope and a call to action for humanity as we awaken to interdisciplinary, systemic solutions. Her work with the International Transformational Resilience Coalition creates conversations within the public and private sectors to build capacity for resilience. As a result of this work, she has developed The Transformational Resilience Project (TRP), highlighted in this workshop. The TRP is meant to be replicated in other regions beyond her own. Rebecca is a clinical social worker with private practices in NH and VT. She is a member of the NH Disaster Behavioral Health Response Team as well as the NH Healthcare Workers for Climate Action’s Behavioral Health Working Group and Climate Justice Working Group.
Andy Gersten, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Manchester, NH. He has over 35 years experience providing psychotherapy to individuals, families, and groups as well as consultation services to medical providers, communities, and schools. More recently, he has been an active volunteer with the NH Healthcare Workers for Climate Action (NHH,CWCA; https://www.nhclimatehealth.org/) since its inception in August, 2021, specifically with the Behavioral Health Work Group. He has attended workshops on the effects of climate change on mental health as well continuing to read journal articles on how climate change has and will likely continue to impact our mental health. He has presented workshops on helping students manage stress and build resiliency during these challenging times.
