Description of Event:
This course defines the differences between music therapy and music as therapy, explains the benefits of music as therapy for enhancing mental health treatment, and how to apply specific interventions to participant's practices through experiential learning. These interventions include mindfulness, music listening, playlist creation, lyric analysis, and lyric replacement. With each intervention introduced, ideas for how to pair them with other evidence-based therapeutic lenses, such as DBT and CBT, are also discussed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the differences between Music Therapy and the therapeutic use of music interventions

2. Demonstrate an understanding of several different therapeutic music interventions

3. Identify ways to apply these interventions to their practice.

    Presenters:
Kim Johnson, LMHT, MT-BC is a board-certified music therapist and licensed mental health counselor who has been practicing predominantly in PHP and OP levels of care since 2017, providing both traditional talk therapy and expressive therapy interventions. She has received specialized training in DBT and CPT which further inform her therapeutic approach. In 2022, she recorded and released a guided mindfulness meditation album titled, "Tiny Happy Guitar." Kim has also been providing clinical supervision for DBT informed music therapists since 2022 and for pre-licensed clinicians since 2023.
