Description of Event:
It is common for psychologists and most mental health practitioners to be treating clients who are interested or have tried various herbal remedies (for example, St. John’s Wort for depression, Chamomile Tea for sleep, Rescue Remedy for anxiety, Echinacea, Elderberry syrup, etc.). As mental health professionals we may hear about these herbal interventions, but we are certainly not trained in their effects. It can be confusing for clinicians because “Billions of dollars are spent out of pocket per year on a poorly regulated large health-promotion industry with unvalidated health outcome claims and with limited evidence…” (Nguyen & Lavretsky 2020). So, what do you do when clients inquire about them?

This workshop is an introduction for clinicians to some of the herbs mental health clients may be taking or may benefit from. The workshop will explore some of the most common herbs taken for mental health concerns including benefits, cautions, and clinical examples. The workshop will be a collaboration between a clinical herbalist and a clinical psychologist.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how an herbalist can assist in mental health support.

  2. Identify who might be appropriate for a referral to an herbalist.

  3. List five (5) resources to be sure clients are safe if they are using herbal support.

  4. List three (3) of the remedy formats available for herbal interventions.

  5. Explain why a “one size fits all” approach does not work with herbals.

  6. Identify at least three (3) possible herb-drug interactions.

  7. List the categories of herbs with specific plants that could be beneficial to mental health clients.

Presenters:
Maria Noel Groves, RH (AHG) is a clinical herbalist, teacher, and journalist who has been working with herbs for more than 15 years. She opened her clinical practice, Wintergreen Botanicals, LLC, in 2007, and she teaches approximately 100 beginner and intermediate herb classes annually.

Vicki Anderson, PsyD is a NH licensed psychologist practicing in Newbury, NH who has been drawn to the medicinal power of plants most of her adult life. In the past 5 years she has finally had time to study them in depth. She currently introduces the topic of plants as medicine to those clients who are not able to tolerate medication.
