Program Description:
This workshop will provide a basic to intermediate level of training for psychotherapists to effectively support clients who present with sexual concerns. Participants will be offered guidance in responding to clients who mention sexual difficulties during the course of general psychotherapy. The presenter will highlight common sexual challenges that therapists can understand through established psychological theories and treat using existing clinical skills. Recommendations are affirming of clients who identify as LGBQIA, heterosexual, transgender, and cisgender. Biopsychosexual educational resources will be provided for therapists to share with their clients.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize intersections between mental health and common sexual concerns.
2. Describe empirically supported psychotherapy treatment approaches for addressing sexual challenges.
3. Discuss case conceptualizations involving sexual issues through the lens of attachment theory.
4. Apply clinical skills in individual and couples therapy to the treatment of sexual intimacy difficulties.
5. Assess through a biopsychosocial model when to refer clients for medical testing and adjunctive treatments.
