Program Description:
This 1-hour workshop will be highly experiential, exposing participants to meditation practices and concepts in the area of Buddhist Psychology, with particular focus on the teachings of Tara Brach, Kristin Neff, and Jack Kornfield.  Mindful self-compassion will be a central concept and breakout room experiences will include some creative verbal play.  Additionally, strategies to guard against deficit thinking in our role of facilitators of healing will be presented.  Neuropsychological research supports the importance of mindful experiencing together and within ourselves for deep growth and more whole-hearted living.  Consequently, in addition to the traditional PowerPoint format for sharing content, participants will have the opportunity to directly experience and practice meditation during the workshop.  We are all deeply interconnected, so let’s get inspired together and spread our creative healing energy!

Level of Instruction:
Introductory

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. List at least 3 basic concepts from Buddhist philosophy that are the underpinnings of  several well-established psychotherapy approaches

  2. Demonstrate the use of Loving-Kindness meditation in community

  3. Apply at least one embodied practice to shift energy in preparation for mindful focus at work and during psychotherapy sessions

  4. Utilize mindful self-compassion while engaging in structured communication exercises with peers

About the Presenter:

Dr. Chris Chance has been holding compassionate space for people for almost three decades of psychotherapy practice, integrating all she knows that is scientifically consistent, validated, and useful. In addition to a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University, she holds certifications in Classical Yoga as well as Kripalu YogaDance. Mindfulness and self-compassion practices resonate with her passion for co-creating a non-violent, relational holding environment.

Dr. Chance has worked in various outpatient settings including leadership roles in community mental health as well as a military health clinic. Now in solo private practice in Durham, NH, she is focused on supporting the resilient pathways of adults. She also enjoys designing and facilitating transformational workshops for children, multi-generational groups, and adults, that integrate the workshop leadership training she received at the Kripalu Yoga and Wellness Center. Dr. Chance has found that mindfulness and compassion are not only important concepts to teach to clients, but essential practices to support her own continuing development as a compassionate professional and human being.
