A Roadmap for mental health professionals
& public safety leadership

Lunch Included
New Hampshire Fire and EMS Academy
98 Smokey Bear Boulevard Concord, NH 03305
3 Ethics CEs

Description of Event:
This program is Part 2 of an all-day event but the only portion of the day offering CEs for mental health providers. While the morning program will be open to mental health providers to attend, there will not be CEs offered. Registered mental health professionals are invited to join the program at the lunch break (if they did not attend the morning session), meet the leaders of the agencies present, and then the afternoon program (the part of the day offering CEs to MHPs), will educate NH mental health providers on the role of mental health services in public safety while they sit alongside the very representatives of those agencies that need them. The mental health professionals will have the opportunity to build their understanding of the needs of public service agencies and how they can work to support the public safety professional, the departments, and communities in an ethical and culturally competent way.

This is a very exciting opportunity and is being sponsored by the Professional Fire Fighters of NH (PFF-NH) and endorsed by the NH Police Academy, the NH Fire Academy, and the NH Department of Safety. These organizations are committed to building collaboration and understanding with mental health professionals to ensure that our public safety professionals are performing at their psychological best and that the agencies that employ them are creating the healthiest work environment possible. Collaborating with NH’s mental health professionals is of the utmost importance to this effort.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe at least five (5) common signs of mental health distress in public safety professionals.
2. Assess how such distress may (or may not) be affecting the individual's work performance and safety.
3. Recognize the common ethical challenges that arise when a public safety professional's deteriorating work performance may represent a risk to the employee, his/her coworkers, or the public.
4. Identify and facilitate locally available care paths for NH public safety professionals as a team with associated agencies/departments/municipalities.
5. Communicate effectively and ethically with the public safety professional's agency/department/municipality when authorized or necessary for return to duty.
6. Ethically navigate dual relationships as they arise in the execution of MHP services with departments/agencies/municipalities.

The Presenter:
