We benefit from you registering for this collaborative workshop.

Friday, April 10th | 11:00 AM: - 6:15 PM

Zoom | 6 Ethics CEs

Course Description:

Part 1: Navigating Ethics Hell

This workshop explores the complex interplay between ethics, morality, and clinical practice through the unique lens of Dante’s Inferno. Participants embark on a metaphorical journey through “Ethics Hell,” examining how suboptimal ethical decision-making leads to professional missteps and discovering strategies to rise above these challenges and embrace aspirational ethical practice.

Using the acculturation model of ethical development, the workshop provides a practical framework for integrating personal and professional values into clinical practice. Through real-world vignettes and experiential exercises, participants analyze how assimilated, separated, and marginalized strategies produce ethical dilemmas and learn to prevent them.

The workshop will include time for participants to work through ethical vignettes along with instructor-led comments on the process.

At the end of this section, participants will be able to:

1. Distinguish between compliance-based and aspirational ethical approaches, explaining how an over-reliance on rules can lead to rigid, legalistic practices that miss the broader spirit of ethical principles.

2. Analyze how values-based ("separated") strategies can lead to specific countertransference reactions (e.g., over-protection, value imposition) and undermine evidence-based care and patient autonomy.

3. Predict the potential negative outcomes for client care and professional practice associated with the assimilated, separated, and marginalized ethical acculturation styles.

4. Evaluate a complex ethical dilemma from both an assimilated (rule-based) and separated (values-based) perspective, contrasting the different courses of action and their implications.

5. Identify two specific strategies to move toward integrated practice patterns

Part 2: AI Technologies in the Practice of Psychology

This workshop delves into the intersection of psychology, ethics, decision-making, and large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT. Participants will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of LLMs, the significance of effective prompting, practical applications, core ethical principles, and the Ethical Acculturation Model. The session will also explore strategies for incorporating LLMs into clinical practice and ethical decision-making processes. Attendees will engage in hands-on activities with AI tools to enhance their learning experience. Active participation and interaction are essential components of this workshop.

At the end of this section, participants will be able to:

REGISTER HERE

Monday, April 13th | 1:00 - 4: 15 PM

Zoom | 3 CEs

Program Description:

Current political realities affect all of us, no matter which side of the political aisle we are on. How do you handle the significant anxiety that your clients may feel due to the current political climate? How do you handle your own anxiety about this? What do you do if your client has political beliefs you vehemently disagree with? How do you manage your own countertransference when your client’s beliefs conflict with your own? Imagine being able to enter into sessions with your clients knowing that you have a plan to manage conflicting value systems, while staying true to yourself. Imagine being able to help deepen their understanding of how they are being affected by the current political climate, and what they can do about it. Imagine seeing political countertransference as an aid to your clinical work instead of an obstacle.

With the training your will receive from this workshop, you will be able to confidently decide how and when to disclose political beliefs and how to use either the similarities or the differences with your clients’ beliefs to strengthen the therapeutic alliance and deepen your clinical work. Does that seem impossible? Rest assured that it’s actually quite doable. But it does require a reframe, some conscious thought and ongoing in-the-moment decisions that are made by you, the clinician. So join us for an interesting journey exploring this crucial ethical issue that is more and more relevant as time goes on.

Level of Instruction:

Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

List three reasons that disclosing political beliefs can strengthen the therapeutic alliance.

Compare and contrast reasons for and against self-disclosure.

Recognize and name two different interventions to manage client anxiety around political uncertainties whether their beliefs align or conflict with your own.

Describe three ways implicit bias can influence countertransference reactions.

Integrate ethical principles relevant to political self-disclosure with clients.

Develop an ongoing countertransference management plan centered on best practice from current literature and scholarship on this topic.

About the Presenter:

From Stories to Solutions: A Prevention-Focused Approach to Violence Risk (17 Apr 2026)

This workshop is presented by the Nebraska Psychological Association plus a coalition of State, Provincial and Territorial Psychological Associations, Including NHPA! We benefit from you registering for this collaborative workshop.

Friday, April 17| 1:00-3:00 PM

Virtual on Zoom | 2 CEs

Course Description:

High-profile acts of violence are often followed by stories that attempt to explain what happened and why. While these narratives can be compelling, they rarely offer clear guidance for how clinicians, educators, and communities can prevent harm before it occurs. This training builds on existing research and explanatory frameworks to shift the focus from retrospective understanding to forward-looking prevention.

Using a developmental, contextual, and ethically grounded approach, this workshop explores how risk emerges through the interaction of individual vulnerabilities, social environments, and systemic factors. Participants will learn to recognize behavior-based warning signs without relying on stigmatizing assumptions, apply multi-tiered prevention strategies, and navigate the ethical tensions inherent in this work.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Explain how descriptive and explanatory models of violent behavior can be extended into practical, prevention-focused approaches for use in clinical, educational, and community settings.

2. Describe how risk for serious harm develops over time through the interaction of individual, social, and environmental factors, rather than being determined by diagnosis, identity, or personality alone.

3. Recognize behavior-based warning signs that may indicate increased vulnerability or need for support, while avoiding assumptions that stigmatize neurodivergent individuals or those with mental health challenges.

4. Apply developmentally informed, tiered prevention strategies (universal, targeted, and intensive) to real-world scenarios involving youth and young adults.

5. Use ethical decision-making principles to balance safety, autonomy, dignity, and inclusion when responding to concerning behaviors or situations.

Supporting School-Aged Clients: Understanding Educational Services (24 Apr 2026)

Friday, April 24, 2026 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Zoom | 1 CE

Program Description:

This Lunch & Learn will provide psychologists working with school-aged children a concise overview of common special education procedures their clients and families encounter in schools. We'll address key questions such as: When can families request a school evaluation? What role should therapists play in the IEP process? How can schools implement clinical recommendations? While New Hampshire's special education system can seem complex, effective collaboration between providers and schools helps children and families thrive. Participants can expect to leave the training with a clearer understanding of IEPs, IDEA, and RTI, as well as practical strategies for making recommendations that schools can readily implement.

Level of Instruction:

Introductory

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the legal frameworks governing school-based services (IDEA and Section 504) and explain how educational eligibility differs from clinical diagnoses, including why a DSM diagnosis does not automatically qualify students for special education.

2. Differentiate between 504 Plans and IEPs, including eligibility criteria, types of supports provided, and how to match student needs to the appropriate level of intervention.

3. Write feasible, education-focused recommendations for psychological evaluation reports that school teams can implement in classroom settings.

4. Apply special education terminology and processes to collaborate effectively with school professionals and advocate for child and adolescent clients within the educational system.

About the Presenters:

This is a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their research, receive constructive feedback, and enhance their presentation skills.

Showcase Completed Projects

Program Description:

This presentation will provide an overview of anxiety disorders and OCD in youth and the role of parents in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of these common and impairing conditions. It will begin with an overview of current scientific data on the efficacy and limitations of psychosocial treatments for pediatric anxiety disorders and OCD that are primarily or exclusively child-focused. Next, we will describe the core processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as why and how it has been adapted as an intervention for parents of youth with a variety of physical and mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders and OCD. A particular focus of this presentation will be on the bi-directional relationship of parent and child responses to uncomfortable emotions and ways to address these responses when working with parents. Experiential exercises will be conducted to demonstrate the application of ACT to promote behavioral flexibility, distress tolerance, and autonomy support in parents of anxious youth to enhance outcomes of traditional CBT protocols.

Level of Instruction:

Intermediate

Demonstrate their ability to implement two ACT-consistent experiential exercises with parents.

Describe the six core ACT processes and how they are related to and can enhance treatment of youth anxiety disorders when working with parents.

Balancing Safety & Autonomy: Ethical Management of Suicide Risk (8 May 2026)

Friday, May 8, 2026 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Zoom | 1 CE

Program Description:

This presentation explores the ethical tensions inherent in managing suicide risk. Participants will examine ethical decision-making frameworks for populations where autonomy, confidentiality, and safety considerations create competing obligations—including LGBTQ+ youth facing family rejection, families with differing cultural behaviors and values, and individuals for whom involuntary treatment may increase rather than mitigate risk.

The session emphasizes moving from fear-based decisions to ethically grounded clinical reasoning, addressing questions such as: When does duty to protect override therapeutic alliance? How do we balance legal and regulatory obligations with cultural humility and person-centered care? What constitutes adequate documentation of sound ethical judgment versus defensive practice?

Participants will learn about practical approaches to informed consent processes that address risk collaboratively and documentation that reflects ethical reasoning in high-stakes clinical situations.

Level of Instruction:

Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

Workshop participants will be able to:

Apply ethical decision-making frameworks to situations where safety and autonomy appear to conflict

Evaluate when traditional risk management interventions might be ethically contraindicated for specific populations

Develop consultation and documentation practices that demonstrate ethical reasoning in suicide risk management

The claims process, especially for psychological conditions like depression and PTSD, can be complex and relies heavily on thorough documentation. Providers must balance the need for detailed records to support claims with ethical and legal considerations. The challenge lies in capturing enough detail for a strong claim while respecting privacy and professional boundaries. This program will address the rationale behind documentation requirements for establishing work-related injuries and will deliver actionable guidance on documentation methods, useful vocabulary, and treatment progress.
